NORM'S HANGER - LA VERNE'S AIRPORT CAFE

NORM'S HANGER - LA VERNE'S AIRPORT CAFE

Okay so I am totally on a kick about the local AIRPORT since we keep seeing all of this news about AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS.  I'm especially upset by one of the politicians going off on how the controllers are  basically no good and should get in trouble for falling asleep even though IN MY OPINION the actual schedule is to blame.  SEE MY BLOG ON THAT HERE.

Every since I was a little girl I have LOVED AIRPLANES.  I'm really not sure how I was lucky enough to marry an AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER, but I did!  Anyway, my mother would take me to NORM'S HANGER for breakfast some weekends so we could watch the airplanes take off and also sometimes hear the chatter between the planes and the controllers.  So much fun!

Norm's Hanger has really great food, especially their breakfast. And it's a fun thing to do for something different and kind of educational for kids.  I've even seen people there on dates.  So naturally when I was thinking local and because I am still all interested in the news on controllers I though I'd better write on Norm's Hanger.

So if you are thinking of moving to this area, please call me and let me show you all the special things about the area... after all, I do love it here!  I'll help you find exactly what you're looking for!

Fire, Floods and Earthquakes, Oh My!

”The southern stretch of the San Andreas fault has had a major temblor about every 137 years, according to new research. The latest looks to be overdue.”  LA TIMES

The news today is full of fires, floods, and earthquakes.  It seems that everywhere you look signs are pointing to the average citizen being prepared and ready to take care of themselves in the event of a large disaster.
With that being said, I will give you some information today about earthquake safety.

Most of you will be aware of the swarm of earthquakes hitting the Pacific Region.  Below is a map from Cal Tech for the last week indicating the enormous amount of seismic activity in our area.

The swarm of earthquakes MAY indicate a larger BIG ONE to come. I, for one, want to be ready to take care of my family, and if possible some of the neighbors who won't be.  For that to happen, I must be "RED CROSS READY"!  Here is the link to the Red Cross Preparedness sheet on earthquakes.

I suggest you read it and plan ahead... I know my family will be!

Up Close and Personal: Really Great Pictures of the DC10 and Fire Helicopters

DC10 Fire Plane

Okay, so of course this picture was taken by Roxanne.. she gets the BEST pictures!  If you need a photographer for anything, let me know!

Okay, so let's get down to it.  My husband is an air traffic controller in the area.  They got some really great pictures during these fires as the helicopters were actually coming through their airport.  And, of course, I had to add a picture of him in the tower!  TLW, that's a good wife's duty!

Station Fire - Six days and Six Nights of CRAZY!

So by now you all know that I volunteer for the Red Cross (http://www.sgpvarc.org).  I have spent the last six days and nights working in the La Canada, CA shelter for the Station Fire as it has been dubbed.  This website actually has amazing picture galleries along with the most current news story: http://www.pasadenastarnews.comci_13242704

The American Red Cross is made up of many small chapters which cover specific territories. For instance, my chapter, which is one of the largest in the country, serves 1.8 million people in 44 communities from La Canada Flintridge to Pomona and Duarte to Rowland Heights, covering 320 square miles.

When the fire started it began in our chapter area and I am the lead disaster Public Information Officer.  It is my responsibility to get good, correct information out to the media and make sure that the media gets their story while still protecting the privacy of our shelter clients. and for the first couple of days it remained that way.  However, when the fire jumped in size from 5,500 acres one morning to 24,000 by night time, it also jumped to three chapters in one day.

FINALLY, on the sixth day, when we were all dead on our feet, the National Red Cross decided to step in and make it a national emergency.  What that means to you guys is that now they will be sending help from all over the country to help out with the shelters, the feeding, the public information, and the list goes on and on and on!  For all you folks who get hurricanes, it's like receiving all the help you get during those times.

 Red Cross Linda

BACK TO SCHOOL IN SAN DIMAS/LA VERNE

The kids went back to school yesterday with a big bang!  Two weeks before Labor Day, and it's already that time.  But that's okay, because Bonita Unified School District knows what they are doing.

Bonita Mascot

You can tell from their district website
http://www.bonita.k12.ca.us/ that they have nothing to hide.  With Academic Performance Index topping out at 828 out of 1000, they are pretty good at deciding what the kids need to accomplish their goals - a fantastic education!  They link to The California Exit Exam website and the STAR testing website where you can view their performance as well.

So, if you are thinking of moving here, but have had second thoughts due to schools for your kids, you can see that there's absolutely nothing to worry about.. the schools and teachers ROCK!

WHERE QUALITY STILL COUNTS!

Got Pests? Got Tree Fungus?  Look no further, Western Pest Control Specialists, Inc. is here to save the day!

Located in the gorgeous town of Glendora, California (yes, I was born there!), this company evolved from the Western Arborists which was founded in 1963.  This company was then expanded in 2003 when it began to do pest control as well with one of the owners having over 23 years experience in this field.

When you call Western Pest control Specialists (http://www.yellowpages.com/name/Glendora-CA/western-pest-control), you will speak directly with Sharon Juliussen, the President and Ceo.  She says that superior personal customer service is of the utmost importance to the company. That's why she always handles her clients personally.

Most of their clients have been with the company for over 15 years with some of their high profile clients being George Clooney, Warner Brothers Studios, Tom Sellick and the late Michael Landon.  They also have contracts with various golf courses as well as smaller single family homes.

Their boundaries are East to Claremont, West to Hollywood, South to Long Beach and north all along the foothills.

So, whenever you have the destructive gopher, wherever there are pesky pests, whenever you need to save your tree, call Western Pest Control Specialists, Inc.!  They'll be there!
